Meet Team Washington

Melanie Wellstein

Chief of Staff

Melanie joined Senator Washington's team in October 2022. She comes to us from House of Ruth Maryland, and has an extensive background in public policy. She is a Towson native, and is passionate about the 43rd community and its issues. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan, and a Master's Degree in International Relations and Human Rights from the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. You might see her around town at community meetings, or hiking with her dog Ben - and she's always happy to help however she can!

Daryl Thorpe 

Legislative  and Constituent Coordinator

Daryl Joined the Senator Washington team in September. He is a proud City College graduate, and holds a bachelors of Science in Criminology from Bowie State. He has done policy and constituent work for the Baltimore City Council, and he is ready to translate his talent to the team. You can catch him in the District, and he is happy to help however he can. 

Cara Matteson

Legislative Specialist

Cara joins Senator Washington's team after her fellowship with our office during 2023 Session. She is a recent Master's program graduate from the University of Maryland's School of Social Work.

Internships and Fellowships

The Office of State Senator Mary Washington offers opportunities for High School Juniors and Seniors, Undergraduates, and Graduates for internships or fellowships with our office. Through an internship with us you can gain valuable real-world experience, with increased flexibility and freedom. Strong communication and time-management skills, as well as knowledge of virtual collaborative platforms, are key to succeeding in an intern role. An intern will choose a focus area, and will research on the topic, attend meetings with the team, track current events, and create a presentation and paper based on their research at the end of their internship. Potential areas of focus are:

  • Education

  • Housing and Livability

  • Environmental Justice and Climate

  • Access and Justice

  • Community Development and Reinvestment

An internship with the Office of Senator Mary Washington requires 10 to 24 hours a week. Internships will last a minimum of 8 weeks, with possibilities of extension and further career opportunities.
